the Environmental Working Group (EWG) developed Skin Deep initially to develop an understanding of the personal care products we use daily. their research showed that people use an average of nine personal care products with 126 unique ingredients on their skin daily – from shampoo to sunscreen and makeup. most people did not give much consideration to the “makeup” of their personal care products, with the idea that the government was confirming their safety. But we now know that the government does not require long-term safety studies or pre-market testing for most of the ingredients in these products.

the EWG decided to take on this public health concern because they felt that if we’re exposing ourselves – and our families – to hundreds of chemicals, we have a right to know what they are and if they’re safe.

EWG launched Skin Deep in 2004 to inform people exactly what was in all these bottles and jars. The database’s first release rated 7,500 products and almost 7,000 ingredients. Today, Skin Deep rates 70,000 products and almost 11,500 ingredients.

Check out Skin Deep for information on the products and ingredients they use to stay informed.
